For many people, part of their love of travel is the freedom it brings. Yet so many holidays have constraints. There's flights to catch at certain times, a transfer coach along with 40 strangers, then day after day at the same hotel. Sometimes that's fine. But sometimes, you need greater freedom.
For those moments, why not consider hiring a motorhome and simply going where the mood takes you!
Motorhomes are well-equipped, comfortable, compact, and areal home from home whilst travelling. I have spent many holidays in a motorhome, firstly as a child in our family motorhome, and more recently with my husband and children in our motorhome.

There's something special about driving a motorhome. The added height gives you a much better view than that of a car, and as you travel the roads, you see things that you must have passed hundreds of times in a car and simply never noticed. So when you take a motorhome on holiday, the journey itself also becomes part of the holiday. You will sight-see as you travel.

The rental company will run you through the workings of the motorhome before setting off. The key points to remember are:
- Ensure everything is securely stored away and all doors are properly closed (loose and moving objects could become lethal objects if you suddenly need to apply the breaks!
- Ensure all habitation unit (the living part of the vehicle) windows are closed before moving the vehicle.
- Ensure you have disconnected the gas bottle.
- Ensure you have switched the 3-way fridge from operating off the electrical hook-up and have it set to leisure battery for driving.
- Ensure seat belts are worn by all passengers.
You have the flexibility to stop off at sites of your choice for an overnight stay or longer. Many sights these days are so well equipped. Once you get further south in the UK and into Europe, you can expect to find more sites with outdoor swimming pools, etc. We have stayed on many that also have food vans visiting on an evening. In the UK, we have had the delights of a fish & chip van, a pizza van and even an afternoon tea van!

Expect set up to take anything upto an hour, depending on what equipment you have. You will need to fill up your water tank on the way into the site (you can travel carrying water, but more weight = more fuel consumption, so most people travel with just enough to flush the loo a few times, wash their hands and grab a small drink en route. Some motorhomes have an awning (a pull out canopy) on the side, which would need securing to the ground pegs. You will also need to connect to the electric hook-up point (via a power lead), then switch your 3-way fridge over to work off the electric hook-up, connect your gas bottle, and unpack any belongings, outdoor table and chairs, etc.
One of the key things to remember about travelling in a motorhome is to stop off and do sightseeing or shopping in between camp sites. Once you have set up, it takes upto an hour to pack away again, so if you decide you want to go off sightseeing or shopping from the site, you would be better using public transport or going on foot to save yourself a lot of time and inconvenience.
Motorhomes give you a sense of freedom that is difficult to get from any other holiday. You can pull off the road when the mood takes you. If your motorhome is equipped with a decent size leisure battery or solar panels, you can even wild camp (stop anywhere that is legal to stop) and spend the night there. This makes motorhomes ideal for a lower budget holiday, as you don't necessarily need to calculate in site fees for every night of your holiday. It also means you can break up a longer journey with a quick overnight wild camping stop and get straight on with your journey the next morning. The current added bonus of a motorhome holiday is that you can remain socially distanced and don't really need to come into contact with other people. This makes it the ideal pandemic-proof holiday!
