One of questions I get asked most frequently is "How can pack efficiently?" It's a simple question, but a technique that takes many people years to perfect! Before having children, my husband and I got travelling lightly down to a fine art. We travelled the world for upto six weeks at a time and only took one piece of hand luggage each. Having children has changed that! We still travel with a piece of hand luggage each (so that has doubled the bag count from two to four), but we also have a family-size suitcase in tow. Having said that, we ensure there is no more than 20kg of possessions in the case. This takes efficient packing, especially if you are travelling with a baby and need to take toys, milk, food and/or nappies with you.

So how can you pack more efficiently? Here's my top five tips (I could give a lot more, put these five tips are a great start. However, contact me if you need more ideas

). Hopefully there will be some hints and tips here that will help you speed up your efficient packing technique for your future trips...... Tip One: Fill your shoes with your underwear. Shoes take up a notoriously large amount of space within a suitcase, but they also contain a lot of wasted space. Using this space for your underwear uses it effectively and frees up space elsewhere in the suitcase. Plus, it doesn't matter if it has a few creases when unpacked. In addition, you can use socks to pad out any breakable items by popping them inside. Tip Two: Place those filled shoes together, heel to toe. This condenses the space that these bulky items take up. This is a quick and easy space saver. Tip Three: Pack upright, with heavy items at the bottom. There are two reasons for this, but both are connected. Your suitcase spends a lot of time upright, being pulled around, and could even be stored upright of the plane and transfer coach. By packing heavier items at the bottom, you reduce the chance of the case tipping over. By stacking the clothes based on an upright case, it reduces the chances of clothing slipping and creasing when the case is put in the upright position. Tip Four: Roll! Roll! Roll! Rolling your clothes instead of folding them actually saves space. You can pack more into a suitcase by rolling clothes. You could even roll outfits together to save time finding matching clothes when you unpack. Because you save space by rolling clothing, you may even get away with fewer suitcases, providing it doesn't exceed the weight limit. Tip Five: Plan what you are going to wear. People so often take extra outfits, "Just in case..." but they are rarely needed. Consider whether you really need a bathing suit for every day, or could you rotate just a few? Do you need a completely new outfit for every day, or could you match different tops and bottoms to create new outfits with less clothes? This is something to keep in mind when purchasing holiday clothes too.
