As a Sustainable Travel Ambassador selling increasingly more sustainable holidays, I often talk about sustainability and use other related terms. However, I realise that not everyone will know what those terms mean. So I'm hoping to simplfy it for you here and then in future, my social media posts and emails will make a bit more sense, and should therefore be more meaningful.

Sustainability: Sustainability is the practice of using resources in a way that preserves the environment and meets the needs of current and future generations without depleting natural resources or causing harm to ecosystems. Sustainable Development: Sustainable development is the practice of meeting current societal needs while ensuring the well-being of future generations by balancing economic, environmental, and social considerations. Sustainable Tourism: Sustainable tourism focuses on minimising the negative impact of travel on the environment, culture, and local communities while maximising the benefits for all stakeholders. It aims to support long-term ecological and cultural sustainability. Responsible Tourism: Responsible tourism involves making ethical choices while travelling; such as respecting local customs, supporting local businesses, and minimising one's ecological footprint. It emphasises a traveller's responsibility to have a positive impact on the destination. Ethical Tourism: Ethical tourism is about making morally sound decisions during travel, which may include avoiding destinations or activities that exploit animals, harm communities, or contribute to environmental degradation. Green Tourism: Green tourism, also known as eco-friendly tourism, emphasises minimising the environmental impact of travel. It involves staying at eco-conscious accommodations, using sustainable transportation, and participating in eco-friendly activities. Regenerative Tourism: Regenerative tourism goes beyond sustainability by seeking to restore and rejuvenate the environment, culture, and communities. Travellers engage in activities that actively contribute to the betterment of the destination. Other associated terms that I often talk about include:

Climate Change: Climate change refers to long-term alterations in temperature, weather patterns, and other climatic conditions on Earth, primarily driven by human activities, including the release of greenhouse gases. Global Warming: Global warming is the gradual increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to the enhanced greenhouse effect, primarily caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Greenhouse Effect: The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. It occurs when certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun, preventing it from escaping into space. Carbon Footprint: A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, produced directly or indirectly by human activities, typically measured in units of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Water Footprint: A water footprint is a measure of the total volume of freshwater, both directly and indirectly used by an individual, a product, an organisation, or a community during their activities, reflecting the impact on water resources and highlighting water consumption patterns. Carbon Offset: A carbon offset is a way to compensate for greenhouse gas emissions by investing in projects or activities that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. (Please note, I do not agree with carbon offsetting as a method of freeing oneself from the responsibility to reduce your carbon footprint by changing habits. It is something I feel should be done in addition to taking responsibility for improving your own environmentally impactful habits). Carbon Neutral: Carbon neutral means achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gases (especially carbon dioxide) emitted into the atmosphere and the amount removed or offset. In other words, the net emissions are zero, resulting in no additional contribution to climate change. Net Zero: Net zero refers to a state where the total greenhouse gas emissions produced are completely offset by the removal or reduction of an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases, typically achieved through various mitigation strategies like carbon capture or emissions reductions, resulting in no net increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases. Biodiversity: Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms in a specific ecosystem or on Earth as a whole, including diversity in species, genes, and ecosystems. Ecosystem: An ecosystem is a community of living organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, interacting with each other and their physical environment, forming a self-sustaining and balanced ecological system. Resilience: Resilience in the context of sustainability refers to the ability of ecosystems and communities to withstand and recover from environmental and social disturbances, such as natural disasters or economic shocks. Circular Economy: A circular economy is an economic system focused on reducing waste and making the most of resources by reusing, recycling, and regenerating products and materials. Non-Renewable Energy: Non-renewable energy refers to sources of energy that are finite and deplete over time, such as fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas), which cannot be naturally replaced on a human timescale. Renewable Energy: Renewable energy sources, like solar, wind, and hydropower, are forms of energy that are naturally replenished and do not deplete finite resources, making them environmentally friendly. I hope that clarifies some of the terms that you may have been unsure about. If you have any further questions regarding sustainability, please feel free to ask! ©Julie at Worldwide Explorer Travel Holidays, October 2023
